What is Spiritual Direction?

You might come to spiritual direction for a variety of reasons, including:

– to identify and trust your own experiences of God
– to discern and make difficult choices
– to share your hopes, struggles and losses
– you may come to realize how God’s spirit is truly with you every day and everywhere
– to love the essence of your spiritual affiliation with integrity

Spiritual direction is the art of examining your life for the energy, presence and movement of God. It is a long, loving look at the “real.” A spiritual director assists a “directee” in that look. The director provides support and prayer along the way.

Spiritual direction is an ancient Christian discipline. When the church was only a few hundred years old, people seeking wisdom would trek to the desert to meet with renowned holy men who had sequestered themselves in caves (to reduce distractions). Few of us work in caves any more…and many of us are women!

Spiritual direction is the practice of seeing God’s activity in our life experience to reveal the Christian tradition.
